James Norwood clears waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox acquired right-handed reliever James Norwood from the Phillies back on June 18. Following the trade, he was placed on the 40-man roster. However, his time on the 40-man roster short lived, as Norwood was designated for assignment the following day.
Norwood cleared waivers on Saturday and the Red Sox placed him to Triple-A Worcester, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith.
Boston designated Norwood because MLB teams were only permitted to carry 13 pitchers. The move paved way for prospect Jeter Downs to earn his first big league call up.
This season, Norwood struggled with the Phillies. In 20 appearances, he has pitched to a 8.31 ERA with 22 strikeouts and nine walks.
Over the course of his big league career, Norwood has spent time with the Cubs and the Padres. He owns a career 5.48 ERA in 48 appearances over five seasons.
