It was fun while it lasted, Red Sox DFA James Norwood
Boston promoted Jeter Downs on Monday, Norwood will need to clear waivers to stay with the organization
The James Norwood-era in Boston was incredibly short lived. He’ll be rememberer for appearing in more news articles by the media than games played with the Red Sox.
On Saturday night, the Red Sox acquired Norwood from the Phillies for cash considerations after he was designated for assignment earlier in the week.
Norwood who was expected to be added to the major league roster following the trade, instead finds himself in roster limbo.
The Red Sox announced on Monday that they were promoting Jeter Downs from Triple-A Worcester. Downs promotion comes as the rules for MLB rosters have changed. Teams are no longer permitted to carry 14 pitchers, Norwood was removed from the roster and Downs added.

Downs will serve as a bench infielder option the next couple of games until Kiké Hernandez and Christian Arroyo comeback from the injured list.
Boston has seven days to trade, waive or release Norwood. There is a chance he could clear waivers and be sent to Triple-A Worcester.
Norwood has struggled this season with the Phillies. In 20 appearances, he has pitched to a 8.31 ERA with 22 strikeouts and nine walks.
Over the course of his big league career, Norwood has spent time with the Cubs and the Padres. He owns a career 5.48 ERA in 48 appearances over five seasons.
