Injuries continues to haunt the Red Sox early on this season
Red Sox infielder Romy Gonzalez is the latest player to be bit by the injury bug.
The versatile infielder, who was called up from Triple-A Worcester prior to the home opener on Tuesday, is dealing with an injured left wrist. He suffered the injury on Wednesday night on a sliding play while at shortstop.
Gonzalez had X-rays on his wrist on Thursday, and they came back negative, which is considered day-to-day.
Rafael Devers continues to deal with a sore shoulder that he has had since the spring. The issue kept the star out of two games in Seattle and on Wednesday night against the Orioles.
Devers considers his ailment to be day-to-day and doesn’t think it’s serious. “It’s not a very poor injury, so just going to keep working. But I think it’s nothing (serious). So, it’s going to be day-to-day,” Devers said through team translator Carlos Villoria Benítez postgame.
“Like I said at that time (in Seattle), I’ve been feeling it since spring training. But every time I was swinging, I was feeling a little bit more and more. So for me, I think two or three days (off) is going to be enough,” Devers added.
If Gonzalez and/or Devers were to land on the injured list, it would put more strain on the organizational depth. Vaughn Grissom is still a few weeks away before he will be rejoining the Red Sox. The infielder has not yet started his rehab assignment but is expected to join the WooSox on Friday in Syracuse.
Grissom missed all of the spring with hamstring and groin issues. Once he is recalled to Boston, it’s not yet known if he will play second base or be an option at shortstop, with Trevor Story out for the season with a left shoulder injury.
The Red Sox could recall Bobby Dalbec, who was optioned back to Worcester in favor of Gonzalez. Outside of that, every other infielder on the 40-man roster is on the 26-man roster, with the exception of Dalbec.
If Boston wants to stay with internal options and either player needs an IL stint, Nick Sogard or Eddy Alvarez could be the next two players in line for a big league call-up. The would need to be added to the 40-man roster in order to be added to the Red Sox. Sogard has never played beyond Triple-A but offers versatility all over the infield and has played some outfield. Alvarez has had big league time with the Marlins and Dodgers, playing 50 games between the two organizations.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow could seek help outside the organization and look to bring in recently DFA’d Orioles infielder Tony Kemp. He would be a temporary bandage while some of the ailing infielders heal up.
