During the first two weeks of the 2024 campaign, the Red Sox offense has flexed its power, scoring at least five runs six times. While they have been led by outfielders such as Tyler O’Neill and Jarren Duran, one player who has been a pleasant surprise is Reese McGuire. In his limited opportunities, the 29-year-old has been a reliable run producer.
Through nine games, McGuire has hit two home runs, surpassing his total from last year. He has also driven in a team-high eight runs and already set new personal bests. On April seventh against the Angels, McGuire drove in a career-high five runs while recording his second multi-hit game of the season.
Although McGuire is not expected to hit like this all season, his play has been a bright spot. He has always been known for his defense, but his hot start at the plate added another element to his game. It is making it hard for Red Sox manager Alex Cora to keep him out of the lineup.
Additionally, the former first-round pick has not had to rely on his power to make a difference. Only three of his eight hits have gone for extra bases. The Kentwood native has also drawn three walks and is taking advantage of what pitchers give him.
Due to McGuire’s hot start, the Red Sox catching tandem has proven problematic for opponents. Connor Wong is still searching for his first home run, but he has posted a .316 batting average in six games. Regardless of who has been behind the plate, the Red Sox have been in good hands.
If McGuire can continue to maximize his opportunities, the Red Sox offense will have another veteran option to turn to. In 119 games with the Red Sox, McGuire has posted a .293 batting average, his highest with any team.
