Franchy Cordero looking to bring his offensive production from Triple-A Worcester to Boston
The Red Sox have gotten no production out of first base this season
The Red Sox called up Franchy Cordero on Friday after designating Travis Shaw for assignment. Boston is hoping Cordero can translate his success he’s had for Triple-A Worcester at the plate with the major league club.
Prior to his call up to the big league roster, Cordero was hitting .296 with eight doubles, three homers, 24 RBIs, 21 hits in 71 at-bats with the WooSox.
The Red Sox have gotten no production from first base this season. Prior to being DFA’d, Shaw went 0-for-19 at the plate and Bobby Dalbec has struck out 23 times in 68 at-bats. He has struggled mightily at the plate posting a .147 average with only 10 hits this season.
Cordero now gets another opportunity after struggling last season with the Red Sox. The left-handed slugger only hit .189 with one home run and nine RBIs in 48 games with the club.
Cordero earned a start against the Orioles on Friday and played first base. While he went hitless, he didn’t strike out and put the ball in play in each at-bat.
The 27-year-old Cordero will be a nice platoon option with the struggling Dalbec. The lefty will likely start against right-handed pitching. This is a big opportunity for Cordero because he will have Triston Casas lurking over his shoulder to take over first base.
The Red Sox offense is struggling to begin the season. The offense is towards the bottom in almost every statistical category. Boston is 25th in the league with 12 home runs, 22nd in RBIs with 75, 29th with 48 walks, 29th in OBP at .273 and 21st in with .225 average.
Cordero won’t move the needle in all those categories but the Red Sox need help at first and someone to reduce the amount of strikeouts from that spot in the lineup.
