On Friday afternoon, Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported that Travis Shaw had been designated for assignment from Boston. In that report, Cotillo also stated that Franchy Cordero was a “natural fit” to join the big league club today in Baltimore.
Shortly after this report was sent out by Cotillo, he later confirmed that Cordero would in fact join the big league club. And it would happen today, in Baltimore.
This season with Triple-A Worcester in 19 games, Cordero has three homers with 24 RBI in 71 at-bats with 21 hits. He slashed .296/.378/.535 with an OPS of .913.
We wrote about Triston Casas potentially getting a promotion, but how he wasn’t ready yet. It is easy to go with a guy who’s already had some time in the majors compared to someone who hasn’t had an at-bat at the big league level.
Cordero first made his big league debut with the San Diego Padres in 2017 where he appeared in 30 games. He appeared 49 games combined between 2018 and 2019 with the Padres. In 2020, Cordero appeared in just 16 games with the Kansas City Royals, and just last season, after being traded to Boston, he appeared in 48 games with the Red Sox. He has 13 home runs and 45 RBI in his MLB career.
