Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees revealed in an interview on ESPN Radio that he is unable to throw with his right arm, stating he can now only throw left handed.
Brees was asked in the interview when the last time an NFL team called him about playing, indicating that a team put out a feeler after he retired in 2021.
“It was probably the year after I retired, so 2021,” Brees said while laughing. “There might have been a feeler or two that was put out there after that.”
The future Hall of Famer would add: “But look, I’ll let you in on a little fact: I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. My right arm does not work. So when I throw in the back yard right now, I throw left-handed.
“I can play pickleball just because it’s below the waist, but anything above my shoulders I’ve got a hard time with.”
Brees thinks that his inability to not be able throw with his right arm stems from the dislocation of his right shoulder while he was with the Chargers at the beginning of his NFL career.
“That kind of put me on the fast-track to a degenerative shoulder and all kind of arthritic changes,” Brees said.
Brees spent 15 years with the Saints, winning a Super Bowl in 2009. He ranks only second to Tom Brady for the most career passing yards and passing touchdowns in NFL history.
“I don’t throw with my right arm anymore,” Brees added. “If I could, I would absolutely still be playing.”
