Former Red Sox All-Star reliever will throw in pitching showcase
Former Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes plans to throw a bullpen session for potential interested teams later this week, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Barnes is currently a free agent after spending last season with the Marlins. The right-handed reliever remains unsigned just two weeks before players report to spring training.
The 2021 All-Star, pitched nine seasons for the Red Sox before being designated for assignment last January. Boston would trade Barnes to the Marlins for left-handed reliever Richard Bleier.
The 33-year-old was healthy for half the season for Miami before suffering a hip injury that forced him to undergo a left hip femoral acetabular impingement surgery.
Barnes appeared in just 24 games for the Marlins, posting a 1-0 record with a 5.48 ERA, making one start, with 20 strikeouts over 21 1/3 innings of work.
His final appearance for the Marlins came on June 1 against the Padres. The righty was tagged for five runs on four hits while recording a single out. Barnes landed on the injured list following that appearance.
The Fish declined their $8 million team option on Bares and paid a $2.25 million buyout. The 2023 season was the final year of his two-year, $18.75 million extension he signed while Chaim Bloom was chief baseball officer.
