Former NL Central general manager the latest candidate to emerge for the Red Sox vacant front office role
The Red Sox have a new name that has emerged to be their future leader of baseball operations.
According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, former Pirates general manager Neal Huntington will interview with the Red Sox.
“Multiple sources confirm that former Pirates GM Neal Huntington is a candidate for the Red Sox head of baseball ops position. Was let go in Pittsburgh after 2019 season. Worked with Guardians last season. A New Hampshire native,” reported Bradford.
Huntington spent 12 seasons as the general manager of the Pirates. During that span, the team had four winning seasons and made the playoffs thrice in a row from 2013-15.
The Pirates best year under Huntington came during the 2013 season where they finished just one win short of making it to the NLCS.
Huntington is also known for trading starting Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows and Shane Baz to the Rays for Chris Archer. He traded Gerrit Cole to the Astros and also moved closer Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt to the Red Sox prior to the 2013 season.
He was fired by the Pirates following the 2019 season and was replaced by former Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington.
The Red Sox are also expected to interview Twins general manager Thad Levine. Other candidates are beginning to emerge in the team’s search, former Astros general manager James Click, Cubs assistant general manager Craig Breslow and recent Marlins front office leader Kim Ng are options.
