The Carolina Hurricanes are signing former Boston Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak on a professional agreement (PTO), the team announced.
“Goaltender Jaroslav Halak is joining the Hurricanes as a free agent tryout. Frederik Andersen is dealing with a medical issue and undergoing evaluations. An update will be provided when available, but no further comment will be issued until that time,” the Hurricanes announced on social media.
The 38-year-old spent three seasons in Boston from 2018-2021, he was the club’s No. 1 goalie in the 2020 playoffs in the bubble when Tuukka Rask left the team due to family reasons.
Halak was 49-23-14 posting a 2.40 GAA during his time wearing the black and gold.
Over the course of his career, Halak is is 295-189-69 with a 2.50 GAA, .915 save percentage and 53 shutouts in 581 games (555 starts) with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, Islanders, Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and Rangers.
He spent last season with the Rangers, owning a 10-9-5 record with a 2.72 GAA and a .903 save percentage.
The well-traveled goalie will provide depth for the Hurricanes between the pipes while Andersen is dealing with his current medical issue. Carolina’s next game is on Tuesday at home, against the Sabres.
