Matthew Poitras has looked like a seasoned veteran through his first 10 games of his professional career. The 19-year-old added two more points to his stat sheet in the 5-4 loss to the Red Wings on Saturday night.
Poitras scored his fourth goal of the season, putting the Bruins up 2-0 in the first period. The teenage forward juked Red Wings goalie Ville Husso and made a pretty backhanded shot to light the lamp.
The goal was his first since the Bruins announced that he would be remaining with the team. Boston had the option to send Poitras back to his junior team, the Ontario Hockey League Guelph Storm. Instead, Don Sweeney elected to keep the young star on his roster.
“I think his play, he’s earned it,” the Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said. “I think we’re comfortable with him. There’s still no guarantees here for the rest of the year, but we feel that the way he’s progressed, that for the time being, he’s going to be a Bruin, and he’s helping us win hockey games, and that’s the most important thing, right? He’s still 19, so we’re going to be cautious.”
Poitras who is in the first year of his three-year, $2.6 million deal, is not trying to play with pressure and enjoy the moment with the Bruins.
“I’m still going to try to play with the pressure and play with the mindset that I’m trying to make the team,” Poitras told reporters after practice on Thursday. “I’m trying to still stick around here for the rest of the year. Just because I’m playing in my tenth game doesn’t mean I’m gonna be here for the rest of the year.”
