Former AL West general manager declines offer to interview with the Red Sox
The Red Sox are seemingly having a tough time finding people interested in interviewing for their vacant front office position to replace Chaim Bloom.
On Friday, former Rangers general manager and then president of baseball operations Jon Daniels has declined an opportunity to interview with the Red Sox, per WEEI’s Rob Bradford.
According to Bradford, Daniels cited family reasons for his decision to opt out of the process. Daniels’ wife and children reside in Texas and wasn’t comfortable moving them to Boston for the new job.
Daniels spent 17 seasons in the Rangers organization, leading them to back-to-back American League pennants in 2010 and 2011. The Rangers have only made it to the World Series those two seasons in club history. Texas lost both Fall Classic’s, they fell to the Giants in 2010 and the Cardinals the following season.
The 46-year-old remained with Texas until the middle of the 2022 season, when he was fired by the organization. In November thats year, he was hired by the Rays and serves as a senior advisor in the baseball operations department.
Over the last few days, the Red Sox have reportedly been told by numerous candidates they aren’t interested in the vacant baseball operations role. Candidates have been weary to take the role due to the last two leaders of the front office lasting just four seasons.
Any external hire for the Red Sox will inherit Alex Cora, who will remain on the job for next season. In addition, the Red Sox have a number of significant front office leaders who are remaining with the team. Typically a new leader of a baseball department brings in their own people and field manager.
