David Hamilton and Wilyer Abreu land on IL
On Saturday, The WooSox placed infielder David Hamilton and outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the IL.
Hamilton lands on the IL with a left thumb sprain, while Abreu was placed due to a right hamstring strain.
Abreu battled a hamstring strain towards the end of Spring training that caused him to miss time at the beginning of the season. The 23-year-old started to heat up at the plate recently, as he has bumped his OPS on the season to .859. He has also impressed in the outfield as well, adding 5 outfield assists between left and right field.
Hamilton has “cooled off” for his standards with a .200 batting average over his last 19 games. His 11 home runs this season has him on pace to hit the most he has ever hit in his minor league career so far. The WooSox will miss his speed at the top of the lineup given his 26 steals in 47 games played so far.
Both Hamilton and Abreu are current members of the Red Sox 40-man roster and potential options for playing time in the majors later in the year.
The WooSox roster currently sits at 26 and will most likely look to Portland to fill the spots for the time being.
