WooSox Manager Chad Tracy had high praise of Wilyer Abreu's arm in right field
Wilyer Abreu made his debut for the WooSox on Tuesday after a brief IL stint to start the season. The IL stint came at a time when Abreu was really heating up and catching the attention of a lot of Red Sox fans. This was the first taste for most fans to see one of the pieces that came over at the 2022 trade deadline in the Christian Vazquez trade.
Prior to the hamstring injury that ended his spring a little early, Abreu was hitting well in Grapefruit League action and ended with a 1.055 OPS over eight games.
While Abreu went 0-3 with a walk in his debut, his manager liked what he saw in his first at-bats of the year.
“Abreu looked fine. He drew a walk in his first at-bat, which I think he drew close to 125 of those last year.” WooSox manager Chad Tracy said postgame on Tuesday. “He was patient and swung at strikes. It was a tough assignment, he faced quite a few lefties in the starter and relievers, so it was a good challenge for him.”
The postgame praise from his manager continued on his great day in the field where he should off his impressive arm strength.
“He made some good throws from right field; he just really has a great arm.” Tracy added. It’s a strong accurate arm that stays low to the ground and seems to always perfectly one hop to the base.”
Tracy chatted more with the media the following day about how his throws to any bag seem to always land in the same spot on a one-hop. Abreu followed up his debut with another start in right field where he went 1-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
