Current Twins general manager no longer in running for Red Sox top front office job
Thad Levine won't be moving on
The Boston Red Sox front office search continues and updates continue to trickle in.
Twins general manager Thad Levine is no longer a finalist for the GM vacant, according to Jeremy Nygaard of Twins Daily. Boston has told Levine he is no longer in running, per MassLive’s Sean McAdam.
The team will begin the second round of interviews this week, with Craig Breslow remaining in the mix for the Sox’ top job, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.
With Levine out that leaves the following known external candidates in Breslow, Neal Huntington and Gabe Kapler in the mix. Internally, assistant general manager Eddie Romero, vice president of amateur scouting Paul Toboni, and assistant general manager Michael Groopman. It is unclear beyond Breslow, if all of those names made it to a second round interview.
Looking at the remaining names it is clear the Red Sox have emphasized the importance of knowing the Red Sox culture. Each remaining candidate is either working for the team, has played for them, or has grown up around New England. Huntington was born in Amherst, New Hampshire and earned his masters degree in sport management at UMass Amherst.
Having a familiar face in the front office such as Breslow, Romero, or even Kapler could go a long way into earning the buy-in from fans once again. Of course, spending money and making savvy baseball moves would too.
