The Chicago Cubs added catcher Jorge Alfaro on a minor league deal, per FanSided’s Robert Murray. The deal will also include an invite to spring training.
Alfaro will compete in spring training for a job on the big league roster with Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya. Both of those catchers are currently on the Cubs 40-man roster.
Alfaro signed with the Red Sox during spring training, he was assigned to Triple-A Worcester to begin the season.
Alfaro was enjoying a strong season offensively while with the WooSox prior to opting out of his deal. He was batting .320 (56-for-175) with six homers and 30 RBI in 43 games. While in Worcester, Alfaro was used at catcher, first base and designated hitter.
The veteran catcher opted-out of his contract with the Red Sox and became a free agent.
He would sign with the Rockies and was added to their 40-man roster. Alfaro appeared in 10 games for the Rockies this season, going 5-for-31 with four doubles and one home run before being released.
Boston signed Alfaro for a second time after Reese McGuire landed on the injured list on June 22 with a right oblique strain.
The Columbian native went 2-for-17 with two walks and one hit-by-pitch while with the Red Sox. He would later be designated for assignment after McGuire returned to Boston following being activated off the injured list.
