Craig Breslow on front office: 'There'll be difficult conversations coming'
Craig Breslow was officially introduced today as the chief of baseball officer for the Boston Red Sox. Many topics were covered including his vision on acquiring pitching, development of current players, and being bold on moves to improve at the major league level.
There has been a lot made about the turnover at the top of the front office by ownership ever since Theo Epstein left. This included Ben Cherington and Dave Dombrowski being let go despite winning a World Series in less than four years, but there has been other that have remained in the front office dating back to Epstein.
There has also been a lot made of Breslow becoming the leader of the front office and not having general manager or even a consultant behind him. Breslow addressed both of those topics while speaking on NESN after the press conference.
“This groups been incredibly welcoming. Certainly there’ll be difficult conversations coming. I think it’s important to get fresh perspective and turnover at times can bring that.” Breslow said.
There was of course no names or roles in particular, but to hear that it at least seems Breslow has full say on who stays and who goes is refreshing.
It was clear from all of the interviews today, Breslow has a vision and he wants people that he knows will work on executing that. If that is some internal people then that will be the case, but in time Breslow is going to want to have people that he believes in most in their respective roles.
“I think it’s really important to be deliberate and intentional on how you go about that. There’s been people who have been here for a long time and been successful here for a really long time and I think the best approach I can take is to try to understand the current landscape before making sweeping change.”
Breslow is an analytical person and changes are going to take time, but it sounds like change is coming. Breslow said he will name a general manager over time but not now.
It is clear the roster will not be the only area of change this offseason as Breslow looks to put his fingerprints on all levels of the Red Sox. The Breslow Era is upon us.
