Craig Breslow makes his first transaction as Red Sox CBO
The Red Sox have outrighted right handed reliever Justin Garza, per The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. This marks the first official major league transaction under new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
Garza was originally claimed off waivers by the Red Sox back in April after being designated for assignment by the Angels in hopes to provide relief depth in the organization. Throughout the season he was optioned and recalled between Triple-A Worcester and Boston.
The 29-year-old pitched as an opener and a reliever. Over 18 1/3 innings he pitched to a 7.36 ERA/5.66 FIP. Walks and hits was an issue in a short sample as he carried a 1.85 WHIP.
The Red Sox will need to activate players who remain under contract and ended the season on the 60-day IL by Monday, Nov. 5th. They will also have to add prospects on to the 40-man roster to prevent them from getting taken in the December Rule 5 draft.
It is reasonable to expect that there will be additional cuts to make room. Other candidates could include, relievers Logan Gillaspie and Zack Weiss.
Garza being outrighted is hardly a surprise, but it is exciting to see the very first step on changing the current Red Sox roster. Garza does have the ability to elect free agency as he was previously outrighted in 2021 by Cleveland.
