Red Sox promote right-handed hurler Max Carlson to High-A Greenville
The Red Sox promoted pitching prospect Max Carlson from Low-A Salem to High-A Greenville this past weekend, according to the team’s MiLB transactions log.
Carlson, 22, made three appearances out of the Salem Red Sox bullpen to open the season before his promotion to Greenville. The right-handed hurler allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and four walks with 14 strikeouts over 8 1/3 relief innings between both Red Sox affiliates.
The native of Minnesota pitched for the Drive on Sunday, tossing 1 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one hit, one earned run, and one strikeout while walking two batters.
Carlson was selected by the Red Sox in the 12th round of last year’s draft out of the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heel signed with Boston for $150,000 and then made his professional debut in the Florida Complex League. He made one appearance, tossing a scoreless inning of work.
The 6-foot-1 and 190-pound righty operates a three-pitch mix that consists of a 90-93 mph that tops out at 95 mph, a changeup that sits in the low-80s, and an 81-84 mph slider, according to his SoxProspects.com scouting report.
Boston also promoted outfielder Kelvin Diaz to the Salem Red Sox. The outfielder had been in extended spring training prior to the promotion. The 21-year-old stole 21 bags in 48 games while playing in the Florida Complex League last season.
Diaz made his Salem debut on Sunday against Lynchburg. He went 1-for-4 with one strikeout, batting out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup.
