The reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs might be without one of their most important weapons on Thursday night.
Following the conclusion of Chiefs practice on Tuesday, head coach Andy Reid told reporters that All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce hyperextended his knee. Newer reporters following the initial injury announcement describe the tight ends injury as a bone bruise.
The Chiefs have Kelce listed as questionable for Week 1 after he did not practice on Wednesday. While the official decision on whether he will play has yet to be announced, the expectation is Kelce will go through an early game-day workout to test his injured knee, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
How his knee responds during the workout will determine whether the star tight end will in the Week 1 opener against the Lions.
If the Chiefs opt to hold out Kelce, Noah Gray will get the nod to start, they also have Blake Bell listed third on the depth chart.
Gray will set to play his third NFL season after he was drafted in the fifth round out of Duke during the 2021 NFL draft. He owns 35 career catches with two touchdowns.
Kelce is a significant piece to the Chiefs offensive puzzle, losing him for one game or more will be a massive blow for Patrick Mahomes.
The 11-year pro caught 110 passes for 1,338 yards with 12 touchdowns and recording 78 first downs.
Since becoming an NFL starter, Kelce has only missed three games. He sat two games due to the team resting their starters ahead of the playoffs and one game in 2021 due to COVID.
