The Rams All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp is unlikely to start the season on time. The Super Bowl MVP suffered a hamstring injury during training camp and will now see a specialist to understand more about his injury, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
it’s expected that Kupp will be held from the Week 1 matchup against the Seahawks. Rams head coach currently has his top receiver listed as day-to-day.
"I think we just take it a day at a time right now," McVay said. "We want to be able to get him back right. We're obviously a much better team when he's available."
Kupp initially suffered the injury on Aug. 1 and was working towards getting healthy following missing the end of the 2022 season with ankle surgery. He missed the final eight games of 2022 with a high ankle sprain, finishing with 75 catches for 812 yards and six touchdowns.
"There's a difference between return to play and return to performance," McVay said. "We want return to performance for Cooper Kupp. We know how special a player, special of a person, and so we want to make sure we are smart with that and getting him back to feeling like the Cooper Kupp we all know and that he's able to play the way that he's capable of, whenever that is. Whether that is Sept. 10th or not, we'll continue to monitor that and control what we can control."
The Rams gave Kupp a three-year, $80.1MM extension during the 2022 offseason. That contract contained $70MM guaranteed.
