Chaim Bloom ‘excited’ to join the Cardinals organization, will assess the ‘overall structure of the organization’
The St. Louis Cardinals have hired former Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom as an advisor to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.
“I’m excited to join the Cardinals and to be a part of this great organization,” Bloom said in a team press release. “Mo and his team have given me such a warm welcome, and I’m eager to build relationships here and to learn, contribute, and help us win.”
Bloom becomes the Cardinals third advisor hired this offseason, the club also hired former bench coach Joe McEwing and franchise great Yadier Molina.
“It’s a great opportunity, when you think about the length of time Bill DeWitt and myself have been together and really a lot of the senior leadership in the front office, it’s just going to be nice to have somebody to give us a fresh perspective,” Mozeliak said on Monday.
St. Louis has been known for hiring from within when promoting in their front office. Mozelialk has considered bringing in outside voices over the last few seasons to look at the overall structure of the organization.
“The main purpose of Chaim isn’t so much player acquisition or roster building at the moment, it’s really more of organizational structure if you will,” Mozeliak said.
Bloom is expected to be with the Cardinals at times during spring training in Jupiter, Fla, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. The former Red Sox front office leader is expected to do the majority of his role remotely. Mozeliak would welcome Bloom in St. Louis from time to time to look at the baseball operations department.
The Cardinals were first connected to Bloom after he was fired by the Red Sox in November by Peter Gammons. Boston dismissed Bloom after four seasons as the team’s chief baseball officer. The Red Sox saw three last place finishes in four seasons under Bloom. The club was within two wins of advancing to the World Series in 2021 but lost to the Astros in the ALCS.
Bloom’s new role allows him to stay within the game before eventually getting a role within a front office again or possibly leading a baseball operations department.
