Bruins Notes: Brad Marchand traded to the Panthers; Brandon Carlo heads to the Maple Leafs; McLaughlin moved to the Devils
After spending 16 seasons with the Boston Bruins, Brad Marchand was traded at the NHL trade deadline to the Florida Panthers.
The Bruins will receive a 2027 second-round choice that turns into a 2028 first-round pick if certain conditions are met, according to ESPN’s John Buccigross.
If Marchand plays in 50% of the Panthers playoff games and the Panthers win two rounds of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Bruins will see the second-round pick jump to a first-round pick.
Marchand is in the final year of an eight-year deal that carried a $6.125 million salary cap hit. The former captain wanted to remain in Boston, but the two sides weren’t able to come to terms on an extension.
This season, the veteran played in 61 games with 21 goals and 26 assists with 175 shots on goal.
Marchand, who turns 37 in May, is out of action right now due to an upper-body injury that could keep him sidelined until just before the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The longtime Bruins forward spent the last 16 years in Boston, logging nearly 1,100 regular season games with the club. He ends his Bruins career, providing he doesn’t re-sign this summer, with 422 goals and 554 assists, totaling 976 points. He’s scored 20 or more goals for 12 consecutive seasons and won a Stanley Cup back in 2011-12.
Marchand wasn’t the only Bruin to be moved on Friday ahead of the deadline.
Defenseman Brandon Carlo was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a three-team deal, bringing back center Fraser Minten and a first-round pick. The Penguins were the third team in the deal and acquired defenseman Conor Timmins and forward Connor Dewar.
Boston will also retain 15 percent of Carlo’s $4.1 million salary.
Carlo has been a staple on the blue line for the Bruins since debuting during the 2016-2017 season. The former Bruins defenseman has played in at least 60 games in eight of his nine seasons.
Minten joins Boston after playing 15 games with the Maple Leafs this season, where he’s scored two goals with two assists for four points. The Vancouver native also added 13 points, counting six goals and seven assists, through 26 games with the minor-league Toronto Marlies. Minten was originally chosen 38th overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2022 NHL Draft.
The Bruins also moved forward Marc McLaughlin to the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Daniil Misyul.
The 6-foot-3 defender from Minsk and the KHL’s Lokomotiv system has been a depth player for the Devils’ AHL squad in Utica.
He currently has 8 points in 47 games played.
McLaughlin, 25, is the second Massachusetts native to be dealt by the Bruins on deadline day; center Charlie Coyle was traded to the Colorado Avalanche.
McLaughlin spent each of the last four seasons with the Bruins organization; in 26 games over four seasons with Boston, he had six goals, 44 hits, and a minus-2 rating.
The Bruins also acquired defenseman Henri Jokiharju from the Sabres for a 2026 fourth-round pick. In 42 games so far this season, Jokiharju has three goals and three assists for six points. He's spent his last six seasons in Buffalo after coming over in a deal with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2019. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the season and carries a $3.1 million cap hit for 2024-25.
Boston is sitting in seventh place in the division with 64 points.
