Bruins deal Charlie Coyle to Colorado Avalanche for forward, prospect, pick
With the trade deadline winding down, the Boston Bruins continued to reshape their roster on Friday. They dealt veteran center Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche for prospect Will Zellers, center Casey Mittelstadt, and a second-round pick. While the Bruins got a nice haul for Coyle, they will say goodbye to a fan favorite.Â
In seven seasons with the Bruins, the Weymouth native scored 96 goals while dishing out 134 assists. He came through in clutch situations for the team he grew up watching with 17 game-winning goals. The talented 33-year-old also filled whatever roles the Bruins needed while giving the team a reliable secondary scoring option.Â
As the Bruins continue to get younger they have added an intriguing mix of talent in this deal. So far this year, Mittelstadt has struggled at times, with only 11 goals and 23 assists. However, since making his NHL debut during the 2017-2018 campaign with the Buffalo Sabres, he has recorded 230 points in 420 games. He is only 26 years old and still has two years left on his current deal.Â
While Zellers has not made his NHL debut, he has dazzled scouts with his scoring ability. He is the second-leading scorer in the USHL with 37 goals and 21 assists in 40 games for the Green Bay Gamblers. The talented forward is committed to North Dakota next year and was the 76th overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft.Â
The final piece of this deal is the second-round pick, which Don Sweeney has been stockpiling over the last few days. The Bruins have added four picks to their war chest in three deals this week. That will be useful as they look to add young talent to the system.Â
For the Avalanche, Coyle is a very good veteran piece to add to the mix. He can kill penalties and match up against an opponent’s top line. He will have a chance to chase a Stanley Cup, with many in Boston watching what the Avalanche do.Â
Trent Frederic dealt to Oilers in three-team deal
On Tuesday afternoon, the Bruins began reshaping their roster. They dealt Trent Frederic and Max Jones to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Max Wanner, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick. The New Jersey Devils received Shane LaChance from Edmonton for facilitating the deal, retaining 50 percent of Frederic's s…
