Bruins’ Matthew Poitras out for the season following shoulder surgery
Bruins rookie Matthew Poitras will miss the rest of the regular season after having surgery on his right shoulder, the team announced Wednesday.
The 19-year-old played in 33 games this season, he had five goals and 15 points in his rookie season.
Poitras underwent open stabilization procedure and is expected to take approximately five months to recover, the young forward should be ready for training camp.
"Matt has been an important part of our team's success thus far, and he will be missed," Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said in a statement. "Our medical staff made the recommendation for Matt to proceed with the surgery rather than continue playing with an unstable shoulder and risking further damage. Everyone supported the decision as to do what was best for him at this time. Matt is just starting his Bruins career and is a key part of our future."
The Bruins decided that Poitras needed to go under the knife following two absences ahead of the All-Star break.
Poitras’ health had been in question following his return from IIHF U-20 World Junior Championships where he played for team Canada in late December and early January. He finished with two goals and four points in five games for Canada. The team failed to claim a medal in the tournament for the first time since 2019 after winning the gold medal in three of the previous four tournaments.
Upon returning from the World Juniors, he struggled to get serious ice time with the Bruins. Six of the 12 games he suited up for in January, he played less than nine minutes in three of those games.
Poitras made the Bruins roster out of camp this preseason and made an instant impact to open the new campaign. The rookie was the first player since Tyler Sequin to make the roster out of camp with the team having the ability to stash him in the CHL. He was a key contributor on the Bruins offense, helping Boston win six straight games and a 14-1-3 start.
