Retired center Marc Savard returned to TD Garden Tuesday night with a view from the bench. The former Bruin is now an assistant coach for the Calgary Flames.
Savard signed with the Bruins as a free agent in 2006 and called TD Garden home for five seasons.
“It’s awesome. I miss this place so much,” Savard told NESN.com. “It just feels great. It feels like coming home. Taking it all in, but seeing the Stanley Cup once again… just looking around and reminiscing. It’s a great place to play hockey.”
Savard started his coaching career as an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues in 2019 and joined the Flames at the beginning of the 2023-2024 season. In his return to TD Garden, Savard saw the game from a different point of view.
“This will be a different game down on the ice,” Savard said. “That'll be a bit more emotional. Since day one here, they really treated me like one of their own. I was able to produce here and had a lot of fun here and made a lot of great memories.”
Savard retired in 2018 due to post-concussion syndrome. The last time he had played in an NHL game was in 2011.
Savard suffered a concussion in the spring of 2010 and only played 25 games during the 2010-11 championship season for the Bruins. Though he didn’t play the minimum amount of games required to have his name automatically engraved on the Stanley Cup, the Bruins petitioned the NHL to have his name included.
“That’s how this organization has always been,” Savard said. “It’s a family-first type of organization. You can still see it. For them to do that for me was also the emotional part for me. They didn’t have to do that.”
In 304 games with the Bruins, Savard had 74 goals, 305 points, and 231 assists and was known for his style of play.
