On Saturday night, Brad Marchand moved one step closer to making history. The Bruins captain recorded two points in Boston's overtime loss to Montreal. While it was a disappointing outcome, Marchand continued to climb the franchise records books.
The Halifax native now has 877 career points, the seventh most in franchise history. Next up on the list is Bobby Orr, who finished his career with 888 points. With the pace Marchand is on, he should pass Orr within the next month.
As the talented winger has moved closer to one of the franchise greats, he has been a scoring machine during the 2023-2024 campaign. Marchand ranks second on the Bruins in goals with seven, assists with eight, and points with 15. The only player who has been better is David Pastrnak.
While Marchand’s production is to be expected, the last few weeks have provided a reminder of just how important he is. The former third-round pick has already etched himself into Bruins history. That is not something that many can claim and Marchand still has a few productive years left.
Although his focus will be on helping the Bruins win, Marchand is currently in a place that only a few expected him to be when he was drafted. He made his NHL debut on the fourth line as a scrappy winger known for getting under his opponent's skin. He has transformed into a player that can be counted on for 70-80 points a season.
When Marchand does pass Orr, it is unlikely that there will be a grand celebration. However, it will be a moment to reflect on the player Marchand has become and where he stands in franchise history.
