A night for the kids; Beecher & Lohrei score first career NHL goals in win over Dallas Stars
Bruins knock off Stars 3-2
Boston Bruins rookies John Beecher and Mason Lohrei both scored their first career NHL goals in the game versus the Dallas Stars on Monday night.
Beecher opened up the scoring for the B’s with a goal at 9:39 of the first.
“It’s so special to finally get the first one,” Beecher told NESN’s Sophia Jurksztowicz after the first period. “I was kind of just looking to go low to high there, and then their winger was kind of cutting it off, so figured, you know, try to attack middle as best I could and try to snap one off quick before they got a stick on it.”
Beecher was the 30th overall pick by the Bruins in the 2019 draft. He made the final roster after having a solid preseason with the team.
Lohrei scored his first goal a few minutes later at the 5:51 mark.
“You dream your whole life of being able to score in the NHL and play in the NHL. That [first] goal is kind of like the ribbon being pulled off that you actually belong,” Head Coach Jim Montgomery told NESN’s Andy Brickley postgame.
Lohrei made his debut on Nov 2 versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was called up from Providence after Charlie McAvoy’s suspension and Matt Grzelcyk’s placement on the long-term injury reserve.
The Bruins went into the third period up 2-0.
Wyatt Johnston cut the lead in half, 2-1, at the 14:51 mark. The goal stopped a 122-minute offensive drought for the Stars. Brad Marchand was quick to respond with a power play goal at 10:09 to put the B’s back up by two.
Joe Pavelski put one in the net with 28 seconds left in the third, cutting the deficit to 3-2, but the Stars were unable to rally.
Jeremy Swayman had 35 saves and improved to 6-0 in the goal.
“That’s what’s special about this group is that there’s never a doubt,” Swayman told Sophia Jurksztowicz postgame. “We know that it’s going to be hard to win in this league and it’s that much sweeter when we do.”
The B’s will head back home with a 10-1-1 record. They will face the 5-2-3 New York Islanders at TD Garden on Nov 9.
Charlie Coyle has continued to be a consistent source of offense
After an offseason full of change, Charlie Coyle entered the 2023-2024 campaign as one of the Bruins veterans’ leaders on offense. The former first-round pick has been a player the Bruins can rely on since his arrival in Boston and that has continued in his sixth season in the black and gold.
