Eastern Conference team signs Patrick Kane, Boston Bruins were poking around at the top free agent winger
The Boston Bruins have played poorly of late, dropping their last three games.
Despite the Bruins poor play, the Black and Gold is still one of the best teams in the National Hockey League.
With their play this season, there has already been speculation as to what the B’s will be looking for ahead of the trade deadline to improve their roster.
There were rumors that the Bruins were showing interest in free agent Patrick Kane. The former Blackhawks and Rangers star is coming off hip surgery and now the 35-year-old will sign with the Detroit Red Wings, per Elliott Friedman.
“There’s a couple teams out there who suspect that Boston might be another team that’s poked around on ]Kane],” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman told Jeff Marek in the latest ’32 Thoughts’ podcast. “It’s all circumstantial evidence, but it makes sense because the thing about Boston is they’re a good team, they could win. I don’t know if they could do more than one year. I am not sure that makes any sense for them. But they are the kind of organization that would look at Kane and say, ‘Does this help us?’ or in a good year, ‘What could we add to make us better?’
“If you look at last year, they went for it. They lost in the first round, they gave up a lot of capital, but it was a go for it year for them. And they’re good again. I just thought I would mention it, because it does kind of fit with Boston’s DNA of ‘We’re good, what can we add at what cost?’ And this makes sense to me.”
Kane would have made for the Bruins from the perspective he would only cost money versus draft picks and players the team would need to trade at the deadline.
The Bruins lack the draft picks to make a meaningful trade. Boston is without their 2024 first-round pick (top-10 protected) and are also without a second-round pick until 2026, without a third-round pick or seventh-round pick in 2024, and do not have their 2025 fourth-round pick.
The former Blackhawks star is also coming off a 2022-23 campaign split between Chicago and New York, with 21 goals and 57 points in 73 games, including a five-goal and 12-point line during his 19-game run in the Big Apple.
