Bobby Dalbec hoping positional versatility keeps him with the Red Sox
The Red Sox officially recalled WooSox infielder Bobby Dalbec on Monday. He was added to the roster following the announcement of Adam Duvall breaking his left wrist.
Dalbec will provide Boston a right-handed hitting option in the short-term. Over the next eight games, the Red Sox are expected to see seven left-handed starting pitchers.
“He’s a right-handed hitter and we can use him at first base, at third base,” Cora said to reporters, including MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “Here in Tampa with this turf, maybe we can give Raffy (Devers) a day at third base use him that way.”
Dalbec will provide the Red Sox versatility in the infield. While with the WooSox to begin the season, the 27-year-old played first base, third base and shortstop.
“I trust him (at shortstop),” Cora said. “We did it in spring training. He’s a good athlete. He can make all the routine plays. He has the arm to play it. So if we need him there, we’ll play him.”
When speaking to Dalbec while in Worcester during the team’s Opening Weekend series, he talked about how needing to play multiple positions, it’ll help him get back to the major leagues.
“I am roster wise, with this organization thats probably best fit for me. I always have and always will see myself as a everyday middle of the order, middle of the lineup threat no matter what position I am at. Being able to excel at multiple positions will help my career with this team and other teams as well,” said Dalbec to Beyond the Monster.
The Washington native has primarily seen time at first base and third base during his career. Last season, he played a game at shortstop and two at second base. Dalbec also mentioned that while in Worcester, he was expected to workout at both corner outfield spots.
“Still a little bit of trial and error stuff but nothing crazy,” Dalbec said. “Just doing what I can. Using the big part of the field, timing, like I always say. Effort level, all that stuff. Definitely keeping more of a structured notebook to help give me structure in my brain.”
