Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots to part ways after 24 seasons
After 24 years, nine Super Bowl appearances, and six Super Bowl wins the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick have will part ways, according to Adam Schefter and Mike Reiss of ESPN.
Belichick will certainly be known as the greatest coach of all time and will always be held in high regard in New England, but there is no ignoring his post Tom Brady record. The Patriots are 29-38 since 2020, which includes no playoff victories and three losing seasons.
Now the question remains where do the Patriots go from here. They have the number three overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and a boatload of cap space. Beyond the quarterback, the Patriots need offensive line help, wide receivers and tight ends.
New England now needs a new coach and general manager. That could be one person like Belichick was or that could be two people. Of course with a massive organizational change like this one, it is reasonable to question who else might move on from the Patriots.
Recently fired Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, Brian Flores and Jerod Mayo are all candidates to replace Belichick.
The relatively quick decision of Belichick allows owner Robert Kraft to conduct a thorough search on his next key decision makers. This offseason is not only the biggest offseason for the Patriots but it is arguably the biggest offseason out of all the New England sports since Belichick arrived in 2000.
Kraft and Belichick will speak with the media at noon on Thursday. There are now eight head coach openings.
