Last week the Boston Red Sox promoted MLB No. 5 ranked prospect Marcelo Mayer from High-A Greenville to Portland. This season, Mayer hit at a .290 clip with seven home runs while in Greenville.
However, his start in Double-A hasn’t been as promising as some may have hoped for from the young shortstop. In his first four games in Portland, Mayer went hitless striking out six times and drawing three walks.
“Obviously, I didn’t get a hit all week leading up to today, so getting the first out of the way the first at-bat it felt great.” Mayer had to say about his three-hit day.
Sunday, however, he flipped the script to his slow start in trying to adapt after his promotion. He ended his slump to start the day with a pair of singles in his first two at-bats. The 20-year-old also recorded a double later in the game ending the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.
