Alex Verdugo was insanely clutch during the month of June hitting .337
Verdugo hit a two-run homer in the win against Toronto on Wednesday
Alex Verdugo was clutch for the Red Sox on Wednesday night with a huge two-run home run, double and four RBIs in the win over Toronto.
The sixth-inning homer and extra-innings double helped pace the Red Sox to victory. Franchy Cordero was another big reason the offense clicked on Wednesday. Cordero was 4-for-5 with two stolen bases in the win.
Verdugo’s hot bat helped the Red Sox avoid a three game series sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays.
“I don’t hit too many homers, so anytime I get one, a get-the-lead homer is big, so I definitely enjoyed myself running around the bases,” Verdugo said following the game.
Verdugo crushed his sixth homer and had a scorching hot bat in the month of June following a slow start to the season.
Over the month of June, Verdugo is hitting .337 with three homers, 19 RBIs, seven doubles and 17 runs scored.
“I feel locked in right now,” said Verdugo. “I like where my head’s at, my swing. I like what I’m doing with the ball, going from the left-field line to the right-field line. I’m going to keep going with that approach, hitting the ball hard.”
The 26-year-old outfielder has been trying to make hard contact and spray the ball over the field. Red Sox manager Alex Cora thinks Verdugo is having good at-bats but he’s not seeing the results he wants. “He’s put [together] good at-bats. You don’t see the results,” said Cora.
Verdugo’s offensive surge comes off the heels of a month of May where he hit .219 with a .552 OPS.
“He’s making adjustments. He has been swinging the bat well the last few weeks,” Cora said. “But in Cleveland and here, he’s slowing down the at-bat and hitting the ball hard. We know this guy is a great hitter. He’s an old-school type hitter but at the same time he can catch up with the fastball. He put a great swing on it.”
