'A crazy couple of days for me'; Red Sox 2023 draftee looks back at joining organization
Zach Fogell is back at home with his family in Rhode Island after one of his busiest years to date.
Fogell was drafted in the 18th round of the 2023 draft by the Red Sox. After starting out at Brown and finishing up at UCONN this past summer, the year has been one to remember for the left-hander.
“It was a crazy couple of days for me.” Fogell said of his draft experience. “I knew there was a chance on day two or day three. Day two rolled around and I watched the whole thing and was enjoying the moment but didn’t get my name called that day. Day three comes around and had some calls with my agent in the morning. It sounded like early day three. 15th round came by and there was not much noise. It was about the 18th round so I went upstairs and stopped watching because I lost a little bit of hope. I got a text from one of the Red Sox scouts I was talking to, and he told me he thinks they are about to land me. It was a surreal thing for me especially growing up a Red Sox fan my whole life from a small town in Rhode Island.”
Growing up a Red Sox fan and living in the area made it an even better experience. Fogell watched the draft from his mom’s house in Shrewsbury which made it “even more surreal” to be in the state of Massachusetts and getting picked by the home team.
“In the proceeding days, I flew out a few days later after I spent those days with my family. How the Red Sox do it, all the FCL players stay at the same hotel. As you are walking down the halls in the hotel, you just meet all the guys and that is how we met. We had various meetings throughout the day to get familiar with the program and each other. We played games that included some Red Sox trivia.”
The lefty would go on to appear in one game in the FCL before getting promoted to Salem to finish the year. The 23-year-old is projected to begin the year in Salem in the 2024 season.
