Red Sox prospect finishes runner up for award at MiLB Awards Show
The MiLB Awards Show took place on Monday night. Even with the Red Sox system in a much better place than in previous seasons, there really wasn’t too much love for the individual awards this year.
The only player to place in any of the categories was Ceddanne Rafaela, as he finished runner-up to Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Rafaela was nothing short of spectacular while in center field in Portland, Worcester, and Boston to finish out the year. I had the chance to watch him in person while he was with the WooSox and came away impressed after he seemed to make a highlight reel play every single night. The way he was able to cover so much ground and take great angles to balls was a thing of beauty.
It will remain to be seen where he gets into the lineup next season for the Red Sox. He earned so much praise for his work in center field, yet we saw him suit up at second base and shortstop while in the majors. That was partially due to the logjam of outfielders on the roster and the lack of bodies in the middle infield due to injuries. One should not expect Rafaela to be at the defensive level in the infield that he is in the outfield, but the versatility will only help his chances to crack the lineup more often.
