Zach Penrod throws scoreless start in first outing for Greenville
The Red Sox dipped back into the Indy ball world with another free agent signing last week. Last time they looked that way, Kyle Barraclough was signed, and he has since gone 8-0 with a 2.40 ERA for the WooSox. This time around, they have signed left-handed starting pitcher Zach Penrod.
Penrod is obviously in a different situation than Barraclough and has been assigned to High-A Greenville after pitching for the Missoula PaddleHeads in Indy ball. Penrod started his college career at Corban University In Oregon and finished out at Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho. He would then find his way to the Texas Rangers organization for a season before pitching in Indy ball for three years before signing with the Red Sox.
The Idaho native made his first start in the Red Sox system last Friday and threw 5 scoreless innings. He allowed 5 hits, 4 walks, and had 2 strikeouts in his debut. The lefty threw 95 pitches in the start.
SoxProspects.com had this to say of Penrod:
“Medium frame. Fastball reportedly tops out at 98 mph, also mixes in a changeup and a cutter. Had Tommy John surgery in April 2019. Missed 2019 and 2020 seasons. Spent 2021 to mid 23 in the Indy leagues.”
Greenville welcomed Penrod with open arms to a starting rotation that has seen four members this year promoted to Double-A Portland. Adding Penrod also comes at a time where you had 5 lefties in total between Low-A and Double-A. Of those 5, only two lefties are starters. The 26-year-old brings much needed left-handed starting pitching depth the Red Sox did not have.
