Zach Fogell on being drafted by hometown Red Sox: 'I've been at a loss for words'
It’s always fun to see local guys get the chance to join any of the Boston teams they all grew up being a fan of. That exact scenario happened when the Red Sox selected Zach Fogell from UConn in the 18th round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
Fogell is a left-handed pitcher from Cumberland, Rhode Island. He stayed right at home and played baseball at Brown to begin his time in college. His college career was a bit odd, due to injuries and COVID that didn’t allow him to pitch for almost two years in college. He finally got back on the field for Brown in 2022 and struck out 46 batters in 39 innings pitched.
In his 2023 season, he pitched for UConn as a grad transfer and went 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA in 27 appearances. He also carried an impressive opponent batting average of .208 on the year. The stellar season performance put him on Boston’s radar heading towards the draft.
“I’ve been at a loss for words but honestly this has been a dream come true for me.” Fogell said to Beyond the Monster on getting drafted. “I can’t thank the coaches and staff at UConn enough for getting me to this point. Also, my parents, family and friends for supporting throughout this whole process.”
Fogell’s hometown of Cumberland is about an hour away from Fenway Park, so it might be safe to assume he and his family were even more happy about which team selected him in the draft.
So, for those fans who may not be familiar with the lefty, what kind of player should they expect to see join the organization?
“They are getting a super determined and hard working kid from a small town that loves to win.” Fogell added. “Growing up as a Red Sox fan, there is no other organization that I would rather be with and I’m super excited to get to work!”
