Yu Chang is expected to report to spring training after WBC
The Red Sox signed Yu Chang last week to a one-year, $850K deal. Chang returns to the club after being claimed off waivers last season. The 27-year-old is not expected to report to Fenway South until after the World Baseball Classic, per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.
Chang will participate in the WBC for Taiwan.
Initially, the infielder was not going to play in the tournament, telling Team Taiwan he wanted to focus on his major league career. He later changed his stance and said if he were selected to play for Taiwan, he would.
“If I am included in the final WBC roster, then I will not shirk my responsibility,” Chang said to CPBL commissioner Tsai Chi-chang in January.
Boston signed Chang after the team placed shortstop Trevor Story on the 60-day injured list. Story is recovering from internal brace surgery on his throwing elbow.
Chang played for four teams last season the Rays, Guardians, Pirates and Red Sox. He will be with the major league club as infield options alongside Kiké Hernandez, Christian Arroyo and Adalberto Mondesi.
