Xander Bogaerts on the Red Sox: ‘They have money’
Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts hasn’t made a decision on whether he will opt-out of his contract at the end of the season. All the signs point to Bogaerts opting for free agency.
The All-Star shortstop was asked whether or not he has made a decision and he insisted that he hasn’t.
“I have not... I have not even given any thought about that,” he said. “After the season is over, I’ll just see what’s best. I’m trying to finish strong before I think of that.”
Earlier in the year, the Red Sox front office low-balled their shortstop by offering a four-year, $90 million extension to his current deal. New York Post journalist Jon Heyman reported that a friend of Bogaerts called it a “slap in the face.”
Once the season comes to an end Bogaerts his hoping his representation and the front office will begin to talk.
“Hopefully in these coming days,” Bogaerts said when asked about contract talks. “I see the same thing that you guys see. That’s pretty much it.”
The Red Sox have the plenty of money to spend this offseason. According to Spotrac, Boston will have about $99 million committed to next season. Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and ownership has the ability to extend the 29-year-old.
The native of Aruba also went on to say that he thinks the organization has a bright future and financial flexibility.
“They have money,” he said. “If you want good players and you have money, it shouldn’t be hard, I would guess... If you have money, you have prospects coming up. They’re saying there’s a lot of money coming off the books or whatever they’re saying, so that makes them have even more money.”
