It’s weird to see Xander Bogaerts not having “Boston” or “Red Sox” across his chest. That’s the reality after he signed his mega-contract with the Padres this offseason. On Friday, Bogaerts made his spring training debut with his new team.
Bogaerts was penciled in the leadoff spot for Padres skipper Bob Melvin. It’s not known yet if the star shortstop will occupy the leadoff spot for the Friars this season.
In his first two at-bats of the spring, the Aruba native went 0-for-2 with a fly out to centerfield and a strikeout.
He was later replaced by infielder Jackson Merrill.
The Padres will resume Cactus League action on Saturday when they play the Chicago White Sox from Camelback Ranch in Arizona.
