WooSox starter Shane Drohan puts up best start yet Tuesday night
Left-hander Shane Drohan came into his start on Tuesday needing a good outing. After getting a couple of wins in his last two starts, Drohan was looking to string together a solid month after posting a 7.32 ERA in the month of July over five starts.
He delivered on Tuesday night.
Drohan threw 6 scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters. He only allowed 3 hits and surrendered 1 walk. He would also enduce 14 swings and misses, the most he has put up in his Triple-A career. His 10 strikeouts would also be a Triple-A high and season best for him.
The former Florida State product is now 4-4 with a 5.52 ERA over 16 games in Triple-A this season. His 9.2 K/9 has started to rebound from earlier in the season, but his 5.5 BB/9 is a bit concerning. Coming into Tuesday nightโs start, he had walked 3 or more batters in every start since July 9th. It was encouraging by only allowing one walk in this start, but Drohan will need to keep walk numbers down to go longer in his outings.
The WooSox will need more of Tuesday nightโs version of Drohan as they are pushing for the top spot in the division in the second half. Alongside fellow left-hander Brandon Walter, the WooSox could have a nice 1-2 lefty punch at the top of the rotation as they enter the final month and a half of the season.
Looking ahead, Drohan is Rule 5 Draft eligible this offseason and will be one of the top contenders to join the 40-man roster. Similar to what the Red Sox have done with Chris Murphy and Walter last season, Drohan could figure into the bullpen on a bulk duty next season.
