WooSox place right-handed pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa on the injured list; add reliever from Double-A Portland
The WooSox made two roster moves on Saturday when placing right-handed pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa on the 7-day injured list with right elbow inflammation and promoting right-handed pitcher Jacob Webb from Double-A Portland.
Uwasawa hasn’t pitched well for the WooSox since coming over in a trade from the Rays at the end of March.
In 20 appearances for Worcester this year, he has posted a 7.36 ERA over 59 innings. He appeared in four games during the month of August and struggled, giving up eight earned runs off 11 hits with a 7.71 ERA. The righty made an appearance on Sept. 5 against Rochester and was rocked on the mound. He gave up six runs; five of them earned off five hits with a walk and strikeout in one inning of work.
This is his second IL stint this season, his last coming on Aug. 27. Uwasawa has spent time on the WooSox development list, where players can be stashed off the roster but stay around the team to workout, throw bullpens, or take batting practice.
The 30-year-old made his big league debut for the Red Sox earlier this season. He appeared in two games, hurling four innings with three strikeouts and posting a 2.25 ERA.
Webb, 25, is with the WooSox for the first time in his career. He spent the entire season pitching for the Portland Sea Dogs, primarily as a reliever, but he also made seven starts.
The righty has appeared in 37 games with a 10-3 record and a 4.28 ERA, one save, 77 strikeouts, 27 walks, and a 1.36 WHIP over 80 innings.
Webb throws from a low three-quarters arm slot and offers three pitches in his arsenal: a 94-96 mph fastball, an 80-84 mph slider, and an 88-90 mph changeup. He projects as an organizational reliever and is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this December, according to his SoxProspects scouting report.
