WooSox outfielder Mark Contreras lands on injured list following diving catch attempt
The WooSox lost one of their outfielders for at least a week. Mark Contreras landed on the 7-day injured list after landing hard on his shoulder while attempting to make a diving catch in center field on Thursday night.
“He’s sore,” WooSox skipper Chad Tracy said to reporters on Saturday afternoon. “It’s going to be at least a week. He banged it up pretty good.”
The team initially called the injury right shoulder inflammation. Contreras and the team will continue treatment while on the road and will re-evaluate where he’s at next week.
In his first season in Worcester, Contreras has primarily played center field, logging 88 games at the position. Tracy said on Friday night that he likes having the veteran outfielder in center because he provides a strong backup presence to the corner outfielders, especially when others are learning the corner positions.
While he’s on the shelf, Roman Anthony will see the majority of reps in center field. He is expected to play left field and right field while with Worcester. Anthony, who made his Triple-A debut this week, has seen time in both center field and left field. Eddy Alvarez is another viable option to play center with Contreras out of action.
Contreras has enjoyed a strong season at the plate for the WooSox this season. He’s posted a .203 batting average with 63 hits, 15 doubles, three triples, five homers, 35 RBI, 43 runs, 23 stolen bases, and a .633 OPS. When Contreras has gotten on base, he's utilized his speed, ranking 12th in the International League in stolen bases. Defensively, Contreras has been solid, only committing two errors in over 700 innings this season.
