WooSox manager Chad Tracy holds high praise for catcher Ronaldo Hernández
Every time you see Ronaldo Hernandez at Polar Park, you’ll notice that he’s always smiling.
Despite his positive attitude and smile on his face, Hernández hasn’t played much for the WooSox this season.
With Jorge Alfaro getting the lion share of the starts behind the plate and Caleb Hamilton getting the rest, Hernández gets added to the lineup here or there.
Despite the lack of playing time, the 25-year-old understands his role and that is to be ready when WooSox manager Chad Tracy needs him and to be a good teammate.
“He’s a wonderful human being, he’s a great teammate, he’s got a great smile, he’s always going to be that way,” said Tracy.
“He knows that his job is to be a good teammate. He wants to be playing more, no doubt about it. He may not tell that to you, I’ll say it for him. He wants to play more and we’re going to find a way to get him more at-bats,” added Tracy.
Hernández has been productive at the plate when he’s gotten to play. Coming into Sunday afternoon’s game, he has hit four homers in his last six games. That includes his two homer performance during Game 1 of the WooSox doubleheader against the Buffalo Bisons.
Hernández hit a solo homer in the second inning and then a walk-off three run shot in the eight inning to win the game.
“I just be preparing every day, I come to the ballpark working on my defense and working on my hitting. I am working hard everyday and when I get into the game, I try and put the ball in play. I hit the homer and made good contact, make a good swing and I was successful,” said Hernández post game.
The Columbian native has only played in 11 games for the WooSox this season.
“I just want to play hard and helping the pitchers is my number one priority,” said Hernández back in early April.
Until Boston decides what they want to do with Alfaro, Hernández’s playing time will be limited. The 6-foot-1 backstop will be ready for he’s penciled into the lineup, providing a power threat for Tracy’s lineup and smiling the entire time.
