WooSox lefty Shane Drohan makes first start since returning to the Red Sox organization
WooSox left-hander Shane Drohan made his first start back in the Red Sox organization on Tuesday night. It was his first appearance since June 6, when he was with the White Sox organization.
Drohan tossed 3 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run off four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. He threw 81 pitches, 47 for strikes with nine swings and misses, according to Baseball Savant.
The IronPigs made hard contact off Drohan to open the game, allowing a leadoff double to Scott Kingery, who would later score on a Kody Clemens single into right field.
The southpaw struggled with his command throughout his outing but looked to settle down as he went deeper into the third and fourth innings.
Drohan returned to the Red Sox organization on June 12 after the White Sox designated him for assignment and he cleared waivers. Chicago initially selected the lefty hurler during the Rule 5 draft back in December.
Prior to the start of the regular season, Drohan underwent nerve decompression surgery in his throwing shoulder. While rehabbing with the White Sox, Drohan was used as a reliever. He made 10 appearances out of the bullpen, posting an 8.68 ERA, giving up 10 runs (nine earned) off nine hits while striking out 15 batters and walking eight over 9 1/3 frames.
The 6-foot-3 southpaw offers a four-pitch mix, featuring a fastball that sits between 92 and 94 mph and tops out at 96 mph. He also operates with a cutter, which he added this offseason, an 83-mph changeup, and a 75-89-mph curveball.
The Red Sox drafted Drohan in the fifth round out of Florida State in 2020, and he flashed his potential last season. Drohan dominated over six starts with the Portland Sea Dogs, positing a 1.32 ERA. He was promoted to Triple-A Worcester, where he struggled, recording a 6.47 ERA in 21 outings (19 starts).
