WooSox infielder David Hamilton to meet Red Sox in Minnesota
Hamilton could be added to the 26-man roster in the event Pablo Reyes lands on the injured list
The Red Sox will have WooSox minor league infielder David Hamilton meet the team in Minneapolis on Wednesday, per Chris Cotillo.
The speedy prospect will provide insurance for the roster in the event Pablo Reyes lands on the injured list.
Reyes was initially penciled in at shortstop for the second game of the series on Tuesday night. He ended up being scratched roughly an hour before the game after feeling right abdominal soreness.
Boston will re-evaluate Reyes and is considered day-to-day, according to a team source.
The No. 19 overall prospect according to SoxProspects, Hamilton will provide the team a steady defender and they’ll hope to exploit his speed on the base paths.
The WooSox infielder has hit .256 with 11 homers, 25 RBIs, 27 steals and an .828 OPS in 51 games for the WooSox. Hamilton is one season removed for stealing 70 bags in 2022.
While with the WooSox, Hamilton has played both second base and shortstop. He’s also seen time in center field. The former Brewers prospect will rotate with Kiké Hernández and Christian Arroyo in the middle infield.
The Red Sox infield defense has been shaky this season, led by Hernández’ team high 14 errors. Hamilton will give the Sox a boost up the middle, he has only committed seven errors at shortstop in 41 games with the WooSox.
“He’s an elite athlete and he’s developed a really consistent routine both offensively and defensively. That started last year in Portland and now in Worcester. It’s to the point where he knows what to do to get ready to compete every night, he really understands himself as a player and his strengths, weaknesses and how to attack them both. We’ve seen significant gains in really every aspect of his game coming from his total body of work last year to what he’s shown so far this year,” said Red Sox minor league infield coordinator Darren Fenster to Boston Sports Journal on June 4.
