WooSox: Bryan Mata hits 100 mph multiple times in Triple-A debut
Bryan Mata’s Triple-A debut didn’t go to plan for the 23-year-old. The right-handed hurler lasted only three innings, allowing two hits, four walks and one strikeout.
The Red Sox No. 2 pitching prospect let nerves and emotions get in the way of his performance.
“As far as taking away some good things, I was able to get out of some trouble early in the innings and hopefully I feel like I can probably control my emotions a little more and also can help myself out of innings a little bit faster,” Mata said following the game through translator and WooSoxbench coach Jose Flores.
Despite only last three innings, the righty reached 100 mph multiple times on the radar gun.
Mata being able to hit triple digits is impressive as he continues to come back from Tommy John surgery. He reached 100 mph this spring as well.
Coming into the 2022 season, Baseball America wrote, “Mata featured huge stuff prior to surgery, starting with a mid-to upper-90s two-seamer and nasty, plus slider that darts out of the same tunnel. Both produced ground balls and swings-and-misses and largely kept batters in check on their own.”
As he continues to improve each start within the Red Sox system, he has his eyes set on being 100% healthy and that will allow him to take advantage of every opportunity moving forward the organization gives him.
“My expectations are to be 100% healthy, without any kind of injury or discomfort that prevents me from pitching.
“I would like to, but right now I am focused on working day by day to take advantage of every opportunity that the manager and the organization offer me,” said Mata to Beyond the Monster.
