Wilyer Abreu shows off all aspects of his game to lift WooSox to win
The WooSox lineup is pretty stacked full of talent these days. It seems like there is a different player each night having an outbreak offensive performance.
It was Wilyer Abreu’s turn on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old did it on both sides of the ball. In the top of the 8th inning, Abreu would end up hitting the eventual game winning two-run home run. When the bottom half of the 8th came around, Abreu would end up throwing out the game tying run at the plate on a perfect throw from right field.
He wasn’t finished yet.
The bottom of the 9th rolled around and the WooSox were up one. Luke Ritter hit a line drive off the right field wall. Abreu plays it on the bounce off the wall and fires a missile to second base to rob Ritter of what should have been a stand up double.
Abreu has had a very consistent season in Worcester. He is now slashing .246/.363/.452 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs. He now is up to 9 outfield assists between his time in right and left field.
WooSox manager Chad Tracy has raved all year about Abreu’s arm and his plate discipline, two things that could bolster his chances of getting a call-up to the major leagues. As a current member of the 40-man roster, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him called up in September.
