Wilyer Abreu rounding into form after slow start to July
After a cold start to July, Wilyer Abreu has started to heat up at the plate. The 25-year-old was placed on the IL on June fourth and missed nearly three weeks of action before returning to the lineup on June 22. Over the last week, he has been a hits machine and come through with runners on base.
In his last six games, Abreu has recorded five hits while driving in six runs. He has shown off his power during that stretch with three extra-base hits, including two home runs. Although the Red Sox have looked unstoppable during Aubreu’s struggles, his improved play has important for a team surpassing expectations.
Due to his recent success, Abreu has raised his average from .256 to .264 in four days, which is closer to where he was before landing in the IL. His success has not come as a surprise, as the talented outfielder got off to a slow start this season before hitting .333 in April and looking like a future star.
As Abreu has rediscovered his form at the plate he has helped the Red Sox win and spread positivity in a clubhouse full of optimism.
“Yeah, it's been very fun just to see the results that we've been having as of late,” Abreu told MLB.com reporter Ian Browne on Tuesday night following a 12-9 win. “It's been great to see the harmony and the good vibes that this team has with one another and how it's resulting in wins.”
In the second half, the Red Sox will need Abreu to build on his success. They are at their best when he is locked in at the plate and making an impact defensively. Although this season has been full of ups and downs, Abreu has been a bright spot of late while making the most of his opportunities.
