Wilyer Abreu quietly putting together great season in Worcester
When you have an organization that has hitting prospects like Marcelo Mayer, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Nick Yorke in the high minors, some guys might start to get a little overlooked. Wilyer Abreu is the prime definition of that. Even in his lineup in Worcester, he has Rafaela, David Hamilton, Enmanuel Valdez, Bobby Dalbec, and Niko Kavadas among higher end prospects.
Abreu is having a solid season at the plate slashing .248/.369/.476 along with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs. He also has walked 42 times in 59 games.
Fellow Beyond the Monster writer Ryan Medeiros (@RRyanmedeiros) pointed out an excellent stat on Abreu’s ranks among AAA players:
Abreu ranks out of 52 qualified players 25 or younger in the AAA International League:
16.5 BB% — 6th
0.71 BB/K — 12th
.229 ISO — 12th
.845 OPS — 17th
.371 wOBA — 18th
109 WRC+ — 18th
Abreu also carries one of the better arms in Triple-A, according to WooSox manager Chad Tracy.
“He has made some good throws from right field; he just really has a great arm.” Tracy said. “It’s a strong accurate arm that stays low to the ground and seems to always perfectly one hop to the base no matter where he throws it from.”
That great arm has resulted in six outfield assists for Abreu this year. He has also only made two errors in well over 300 innings in the outfield.
Abreu was added to the 40-man roster over the offseason and will always be an intriguing option for a late season call-up in 2023. While so many fans are calling for Rafaela to receive an MLB promotion, Abreu would be the guy who makes the most sense.
